Business Decision Making for Graphic Designers

The Small Business Administration is a great resource for tips on how to improve your business management skills. A central area of good management involves successful decision making. Graphic designers are often called on to make business decisions, so it's a good idea to develop your skills in this area during and after graphic design school.

Making Wise Management Decisions

The SBA describes two types of decision making: wise decisions, or those arrived at through a deliberate process, and decisions that are made without any type of forethought. The SBA recommends the following to those who seek to become standout decision makers.

  • Define the decision that needs to be made. Make sure that the right person or group of people are selected to make it. Note when the decision needs to be made and identify people who will be affected by the decision.
  • Brainstorm about the decision. Don't censor yourself or others in this part of the process; be creative.
  • If you feel that you haven't generated enough choices, do some research to find alternative solutions.
  •  Talk to experts and seek out other relevant sources of information. The key is to make sure that the options you've identified include all reasonable and obvious solutions.
  • It's important to note than anyone can become a wise decision maker; it just takes practice.

After you've identified all possible alternatives, begin examining the advantages and disadvantages of each outcome. You may even try assigning a value to each one to give you a better sense of where each fits in relation to others in terms of their overall effectiveness toward reaching a desired end.
