Graphic Design Professional Associations
Professionals in many industries join organizations in order to stay current on a variety of topics like trends, legislation and technology. In addition, these organizations offer many services that are not available to non-members anywhere else. Graphic Designers are no different and two of the most well regarded organizations available to design professionals are the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the Graphic Arts Guild.
These associations exist in order to set standards and practices that elevate the craft and business of the profession. AIGA is one such organization that constantly monitors and directs professionals as to the role of design in economic, social, political and cultural contexts. AIGA is not only the oldest design association; it also enjoys the largest membership, representing more than 16,000 designers and students. As the main organization of professional graphic designers, AIGA serves as a center for developing and exchanging ideas, techniques and information as well as defining the standards for graphic design education and the ethical practices of the members at large.
Another such group, the Graphic Artists Guild, is a national union of illustrators, designers, web artists, production artists, surface and textile designers and other creatives who have banded together in the pursuit of common goals. Like the AIGA, the role of the Graphic Artists Guild is to share ideas, raise industry standards, and improve the ability of graphics professionals to achieve satisfying and rewarding careers.
Both of these organizations also play a valuable role in developing the skill sets professionals use on a daily basis. Like any union that supports an industry, these organizations assist their members with educational programs, marketing assistance and legal consultation.
